FAQ

Yes. Currently we are only running workshops in prisons. We run workshops in 11 prisons all over Ireland.

We ask volunteers to participate in and later facilitate at least 3–4 workshops per year. Each workshop starts on Friday afternoon and continues through full days on Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, we offer extra training and gatherings, both online and in person, where everyone is welcome to join.

Before joining your first workshop, your Garda vetting must be completed, and prison clearance processed. This typically takes around three months. Once these are finalised, you’ll receive induction training to get started.

Yes, even if you’ve been Garda vetted through another organisation, you’ll need to complete the process again for AVP Ireland.

Everyone is required to participate in workshops as a participant before training as a facilitator. While your experience in facilitation is valuable and will enhance your contribution, AVP workshops are unique in their structure and ethos. Also, we want everyone to experience the “AVP magic” firsthand to see the impact that AVP workshops can have for individuals and the group.

You’ll need to take part in at least three workshops before attending the Training for Facilitators, which is also a weekend-long workshop. For further details, check out the [Facilitator’s Journey]

No formal qualifications are needed to volunteer with AVP Ireland. We look for individuals who align with our ethos and core values—being open-minded, empathetic, willing to listen and learn from others, interested in improving their relationships, and open to sharing their own experiences. You’ll receive induction training where you can raise any concerns or questions. Additionally, you can contact the coordinator and experienced volunteers anytime for support and guidance.

Yes, all participants agree that what is shared in an AVP workshop remains confidential and won’t be shared outside the workshop in a way that could identify individuals.

We don’t have age restrictions, and our volunteers range from their 20s to their 70s. Generally, volunteers over the age of 24 feel more at ease in the role, but this isn’t a strict limit. Everyone is different, so don’t hesitate to contact us and we’ll have a chat.

AVP workshops are experiential, meaning there are no presentations or speeches. Instead, participants engage in exercises and reflect together as a group. Topics include listening skills, cooperation, and healthy communication. [Learn more here]

Participants are encouraged to approach the workshop with an open mind and heart. Listening actively and sharing personal experiences are key. The more you put in the experience, the more you’ll get out of it.

There is growing evidence of the positive effects of AVP workshops on people in custody. AVP Ireland published a report in 2017 that you can [access here]

Participation and facilitation in AVP workshops are voluntary and unpaid. However, we reimburse travel expenses for volunteers attending workshops outside their hometown.
